Data exchange agreements

Data exchange agreements determine how we share some data and how it can be used.

Numerous individuals and groups share their species datasets with us. We then share those records with other users to help ensure that planning and conservation decisions are well-informed.

Sharing ensures that records are put to the best possible use and raises the profile of the individuals or groups who recorded them.

Data agreements

Sometimes we need to restrict the data we share. We label records to limit visibility to specific individuals or reduce the precision of location information. Data agreements ensure that both we and the data provider have a clear understanding of how the data can be used.

Additionally, we can share some of our data with recorders as part of an agreement.

To protect sensitive wildlife, precise locations will be blurred in the shared data.

National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Atlas

We aim to share species data through the NBN Atlas, making records available to:

  • researchers
  • recording schemes
  • local records centres
  • environmental organisations
  • government bodies

To protect sensitive wildlife, precise locations will be blurred in the shared data.
